Cambrian College students are doing their part to ensure the Espanola Fire Department is ready when the bell rings.
A group of trades students attending Cambrian’s Espanola satellite site have built collapsible walls that will be used in training local firefighters in search and rescue operations.
“The students have done an exceptional job on building these new training walls, which can be configured in various ways to allow us to train in many different scenarios,” says Mike Pichor, Espanola fire chief.
“They are easy to assemble and remove, without the use of screws, thanks to the pins that were designed for this purpose. Thanks to all the students and the instructor, Henry Girard, for initiating this project. We will have many years of good use from these.”
The students are part of the Try a Trades program through Cambrian’s Employment Options satellite site in Espanola.
“I’m so proud to see our students here in Espanola taking on what is a truly important project in making sure our local firefighters and those in the community are safe,” says Rebeka Robin, administrative support clerk at Cambrian’s Espanola satellite site.
The supplies for this project were donated by Rob McKechnie at the local Home Hardware and Marc Benoit from A10 Fabrication.
“This gesture exemplifies the spirit of community we foster and promote at Cambrian,” says Kristine Morrissey, president of Cambrian College. “Seeing students apply their skills and donate their time in an effort to keep people safe is a great way to demonstrate that commitment, and we’re very proud of them.”
