Blind River remembers

Sunny weather, warm temperatures greet those gathered for solemn occasion

The crowd inside Blind River Legion Branch 189 for the Remembrance Day ceremony was smaller than the crowd that assembled outside at the cenotaph to hear the Last Post and remember those who sacrificed their lives to keep Canada free.

It may have been the beautiful sunny weather and warm temperature that brought more people to the outside ceremony organized by the Legion.

Inside the ceremony started with the March on the Colours with the cadet colour guard setting up the flags at the front of the hall before rows of wreaths that would later be taken to the cenotaph.

Legion 189 Chaplin Roberta Wilson-Garrett led the crowd in prayer and had a short reflection about war and hopes that one day they will not exist.

Branch president Vera Clearwater made a short address and later laid the Legion wreath at the cenotaph.

Town Coun. Jennifer Posteraro gave a speech for MP Carol Hughes who was unable to attend the Blind River ceremony because she was at a similar event elsewhere in the riding.

Mayor Sally Hagman also expressed a wish that all wars would cease particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Mississauga First Nation Chief Bob Chiblow spoke about Indigenous people who fought in both world wars.
