The Blind River Volunteer Firefighters hosted an open house as part of Emergency Preparedness Week on Wednesday in the community.
Over 100 guests visited the Blind River Fire Station, some as young as one year old, to check out equipment and learn about what the fire department does to safeguard the town.
Firefighters displayed the newest fire trucks, along with tables filled with giveaways.
Kids were encouraged to collect fire safety toys and even smoke/CO detectors at no charge. A few toddlers were on the hunt for a famous fire-fighting dalmatian.
Many visitors had fun trying on bunker gear.
Acting Fire Chief Bruce Brisbois found it difficult to put into words how happy he was with the excitement at the Fire Hall.
“Open house events such as this create a fun experience for parents and our kids. They see that firefighters are people they can go to when they are in trouble and that the fire hall is a safe place,” he said. “We want our local kids to be comfortable here and one day grow into becoming one of our volunteer firefighters.”
Firefighters opened vehicles, and families were encouraged to sit inside, climb on, and pose for photos.
“Council is grateful for our volunteer firefighters who risk their lives to protect the municipality,” said Mayor Sally Hagman, who was also on-site.” We are very happy to see our modern equipment on display for the public.”
Due to the success and engagement on May 10, the team looks forward to planning its next open house to engage more community members.
