Monday night, Algoma Public Health reported another case of COVID-19 in Elliot Lake and area.

Dr. Cathy Groh of the Elliot Lake Family Health Team quickly responded to the report in a social media post.

"There continues to be new cases of COVID-19 in Central and East Algoma, and now a new case in Elliot Lake and area," she wrote. "This disease has the potential to have a terrible impact on our very vulnerable population. Let us all do our best to protect our friends, our  families, and our community from COVID-19.

"Of great concern is that Algoma Public Health has changed the status of Elliot Lake and area to show that there is evidence of community spread," Dr. Groh continued. "This indicates that after interviewing the person affected, there is no indication the infection was acquired through travel or close contact with a known case, suggesting it was acquired in the community.

"This information should cause people to be concerned and so take every precaution they can.

"The last case was announced more than two weeks ago and there was no indication of community spread at that time," she concluded.
